Traffic Safety Team Surveys from the City of Centennial and unincorporated Arapahoe County residents indicate one of their top concerns are high
traffic volume and the increasing number of traffic violations on Arapahoe County's roadways. The Traffic Unit also assigns
two deputies to work residential areas of unincorporated Arapahoe County based upon traffic complaints and accident data.
In 1998, voters in Arapahoe County passed a resolution which allowed the county to enact the Uniform Model Traffic Code and
fund a traffic unit from traffic fines collected. When this ballot issue was presented to the public it was overwhelmingly
approved. Traffic Unit members are assigned Kawasaki 1000 police motorcycles, and Harley Davidson Police Motorcycles. The
Traffic Unit also has marked and unmarked Ford Crown Victoria’s, an unmarked Dodge Charger and unmarked Chevrolet Impalas.
Currently the Traffic Unit is comprised of a sergeant, a traffic accident investigator and nine traffic deputies. In addition
to working specific areas of responsibility, each deputy is also assigned to five schools for enforcement of traffic and pedestrian
laws.
The locations selected for traffic enforcement efforts are derived from a variety of sources. The primary source of feedback
is provided from citizens who call the Traffic Complaint Hotline at 720-874-3825.
Crash data is received on monthly basis by the supervisor of the Traffic Unit then analyzed. From this data, units are dispatched
to work the most dangerous areas according to the amount or severity of crashes. This data is sent to the County's Traffic Engineer and to the Colorado Department of Transportation for assistance on engineering issues. Speed data is also gathered from the Patrol Division's fleet of computerized SMART trailers. Unit members are then assigned to work traffic enforcement in these areas during the days, and times of day, the
data indicates there is a problem.
