The Arapahoe County Sheriff’s Office Property / Evidence Section houses property items that have been seized as part of criminal acts as well as property that has been found and turned in by citizens in the community.  The Sheriff’s Office makes every attempt to ascertain who the rightful owner of property is and to return the property when legal requirements have been fulfilled.  Often, items of value are sold at auction when the owner(s) cannot be located or contacted.

The Sheriff’s Office encourages citizens to maintain lists of their personal property so in the unfortunate event that the item(s) are stolen or lost, they can be returned.  Some suggested methods that may be employed are:

  • Marking your items with your name, initials, special characters or numbers that would enable you to describe the property.

Due to the dramatic rise in identity theft, NEVER mark items with a Social Security Number.

  • Compile a record of valuables, electronics, tools, etc. to include:

      Make / Brand Name

      Model Name / Number

      Serial Number

      Date of Purchase

      Location of Purchase

      Value

Remember, most insurance policies do not routinely cover cash, jewelry and artwork – please check with your agent if additional coverage may be needed.

  • Take photographs of your property.  Three photos are suggested:

      1) – The item as it sits in your house / property  - overall at a distance

      2) – The item with you or a family member holding it or standing with it – medium distance

      3) – The make, model, serial number & identifying marks – close-up.

Digital photos can now be added to the Colorado Crime Information Computer if an item(s) is entered as lost/stolen.
