As recent trends in auto theft have emerged in the metropolitan area, the Arapahoe County Sheriff’s Office has been part of several auto theft units including the Colorado Auto Theft Investigators Association. CATI worked towards creating the Colorado Auto Theft Prevention Authority, which is legislatively funded by insurance companies. The authority was modeled after authorities in other states to proactively prevent auto thefts. The Arapahoe County Sheriff’s Office is a member of the Denver Metro Auto Theft Team, which is a part-time auto theft task force.

The Arapahoe County Sheriff’s Office is currently in the process of partnering with other agencies to form East Metro Auto Theft Task Force, with the assistance of a grant that was sought from CATPA. The purpose of the task force is for it to be a multi-jurisdictional unit to combat auto thefts and auto theft related crimes. The Arapahoe County Sheriff’s Office has been granted a position, pending final approval.

Other jurisdictions partnering with the Arapahoe County Sheriff’s Office through EMATT are the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office, Aurora Police Department, Colorado State Patrol and the Commerce City Police Department.

We look forward to working with other jurisdictions to improve our coordination of resources and increase the apprehensions of auto theft related crimes.
