April 2009
Robbery In the early morning hours of February 23, 2009, ACSO Communications received a report of an armed robbery at a convenience
store located in the unincorporated area of Arapahoe County. The suspect, described as wearing a mask and dark clothing, stole
more than $1,000 in cash before fleeing the area on foot. Responding Patrol Deputies established a perimeter and conducted
an area search, but were unable to locate the suspect.
Upon assignment of the case, the lead Investigator was able to develop an informant who indicated that a second subject was
involved in the robbery as a “look-out.” In addition, the second suspect, who lives in a nearby apartment, had allegedly provided
shelter to the robber immediately after the commission of the crime. Corroborating the information, the Investigator was able
to determine that the apartment in question was located in the City and County of Denver.
Because the accomplice’s apartment was located outside ACSO jurisdiction and the crime involved a weapon, a high-risk search
warrant was served with the assistance of the Denver Metro SWAT Team. The “look-out” suspect, who provided additional information
about the robbery suspect, was taken into custody and charged with Conspiracy to Commit Robbery. The investigation into the
robbery suspect is on going.
Burglary During the months of January and February 2009, ACSO Patrol Services received several reports of commercial construction burglaries
in the area of S. Peoria St. and E. Caley Ave., in the City of Centennial. Because of repeated victimization, the foreman
of one construction site installed surveillance cameras and captured images of a vehicle and three male suspects. Using a
bulletin prepared by the Crime Analyst, Investigators canvassed the construction sites and developed information regarding
a simultaneous investigation conducted by members of the Rocky Mountain Safe Streets Task Force (RMSSTF).
RMSSTF Agents revealed that the suspects depicted in the surveillance footage were the same individuals suspected of several
bank robberies in the metro area. Based upon the data collected by a GPS tracker during the federal RMSSTF investigation,
the three suspects and the vehicle were tied to numerous construction burglaries across the metro area. Working collectively
with RMSSTF and other metro area Detectives, ACSO Investigators were able to develop information that after burglarizing construction
sites, the three suspects would either immediately pawn the stolen equipment or transfer the items to a rented storage unit
in the City of Aurora.
Ultimately, the three suspects were taken into custody while in the act of committing another burglary in the City of Denver.
Numerous articles of stolen construction equipment were recovered from the storage unit, the vehicle and from numerous metro
area pawnshops. Upon interview, the three suspects confessed to their crimes and were charged with burglary, theft, and providing
false information to pawnbrokers. RMSSTF will also be pursuing federal bank robbery charges against the three men. ACSO Investigators
have cleared at least eight construction burglaries through this investigation.
