In the early morning hours of February 28, 2009, the Arapahoe County Sheriff’s Office Communications Center received a call
from a PetSmart employee located at 8222 S. University Boulevard, who advised that when he arrived at work, he found the glass
to the front doors of the business shattered. Responding ACSO deputies checked the business and the surrounding area but were
unable to locate the suspect(s).Upon checking the business, deputies were informed that several snakes and other miscellaneous
items were stolen from the store. Deputies secured the business and members from the ACSO Crime Lab responded to process the
scene. During the incident, the suspect(s) appeared to have injured themselves as ACSO Crime Lab personnel were able to collect
several samples of blood from the glass near the shattered front door and near the broken glass surrounding the snake enclosures. Later that morning, Englewood Police Department contacted ACSO and asked for assistance in contacting a possible suspect that
may have been involved in a burglary of a pet store in the City of Englewood. Englewood PD’s suspect had been observed leaving
the parking lot of the pet store and a witness was able to provide a vehicle license plate, which registered to an address
in the City of Centennial. ACSO patrol deputies responded to the Centennial address, located the suspect vehicle and contacted a male driver. During
the contact, deputies observed a large snake moving around the front passenger floorboard. The snake was positively identified
as the one stolen in the City of Englewood. ACSO Investigators responded and obtained enough evidence to obtain a search warrant for the suspect’s home in the City of
Centennial. During the service of the search warrant, evidence was recovered showing the suspect’s involvement in the earlier
burglary at Pet Smart. In addition, a court order was obtained to collect a sample of the suspect’s DNA so that it could be
compared to the blood found at the Pet Smart crime scene. In June 2009, ACSO Investigators received the DNA comparison results
back from CBI (Colorado Bureau of Investigations) which confirmed a match between the suspect’s DNA and the blood found at
the Pet Smart. The case has been filed with the Office of the District Attorney and an arrest warrant has been requested.
