Accreditation Update In preparation for the National Commission on Correctional Health Care (NCCHC) audit scheduled for September 2010 ( the mock
Audit will be in June 2010) at the Patrick Sullivan Detention Facility, the Sheriff’s Office sent employees to the annual
NCCHC conference in October 2009, “Building a Health Care Systems that Work”. It was at this conference, that the attendees
were able to experience the most up-to-date and useful information in the correctional health care field. The sessions that
NCCHC provided focused on developments and best practices in administration, infectious disease, legal issues, medical care,
mental health care, nursing issues, oral health, and professional development.
The Sheriff Office employees attended the sessions entitled, “An In-Depth Look at NCCHC’s Standards for Health Services in
Jails”; “Pandemic Preparedness: When H1N1 Waltzed In”; and an Administration Roundtable Discussion about H1N1 and other pandemic
preparedness issues. They attended sessions on mental health, self-injurious behavior, and suicidal inmates. A couple of
sessions on the medical management of special needs inmates were also attended, along with other administrative practice sessions.
All in all, the conference was a wonderful collection of experienced and educated presenters sharing the best practices in
an effort to globally improve correctional health care. ACSO staff also attended the NCCHC updates in April 2010.
