ARAPAHOE COUNTY SHERIFF’S OFFICE

ALTERNATIVE SENTENCING PROGRAMS

REPORT FOR 2009

The Work Release section, of the Arapahoe County Sheriff’s Office, has had a positive impact both within the County and in the surrounding Counties.  For example, the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office is currently in the process of implementing a program using our Alternative Sentencing Programs as a model.

Our program has had to deal with, and meet, the challenges of reduced bed availability.  This is due to the influx of crime over the year attributed to the current economic climate which affected the jail’s bed space.  This increase has also dictated that suggested staffing levels be meet.

The program continues to be a positive resource for our agency as noted.

For 2009, we processed 820 applications and accepted 233.  Of the 820 who applied, 400 did not meet the standard criteria that are set within the program’s guidelines.  419 were approved; however, 186 did not transfer because of finances, a lack of cells and beds or simply changed their minds and declined at the time of transfer.

The Weekender Program has dramatically increased, over the last year, as a viable source for the Judges of the 18th Judicial District.  Judges seek alternatives for defendants who require a sentence more than Probation or Community Service and see the program as a fair method of restitution for the defendant’s criminal actions.

The Weekender Program processed 418 applications with 330 defendants being accepted and only 87 being denied.  This, again, is for not meeting the criteria.

The County received revenue of $340,567.50, in total, for these programs.
