Spotlight on the Patrick Sullivan Detention Division Inmate Programs
The Programs Section of the Detention Bureau offers inmates several educational, religious and self-help programs designed for their benefit while in custody and upon their release.  Inmates have the opportunity to attend Substance Abuse Education Classes, A.A. meetings, Domestic Violence Classes, numerous religious services each week, GED classes, Adult Basic Education and GED testing is offered once a week.  We also provide a unique Pre-release Program which assists inmates in learning skills necessary to find and retain jobs as they transition back into the community.

Three part-time Detention Services Coordinators currently manage our Programs Department. They train, supervise and coordinate approximately 170 volunteers who provide a wide variety of services to the inmate population.  All volunteers must complete a mandatory Volunteer Orientation and Safety and Security Training.  We have received very positive feedback about this training from our volunteers.  Additionally, the Detention Services Coordinators oversee 130 Professional Clergy of various faith groups to help meet the diverse religious needs of the inmates.

The following is a list of Programs currently offered to our inmate population:

ALCOHLICS ANONYMOUS: Alcoholics Anonymous is an international fellowship of men and women who once had a drinking problem. It is non-professional, self-supporting, nondenominational, multiracial, apolitical, and omnipresent. This program is open to anyone who wants help and guidance with his or her drinking issues.

DOMESTIC VIOLENCE CLASSES: These classes help inmates understand the cycle of violence, cognitive distortions and surface triggers that lead to violence, and the role that alcohol and drugs play in domestic violence. Inmates learn how to use this information to make positive changes in their lives.

EDUCATION: The Arapahoe County Sheriff’s Office places a high priority on literacy and education. Education classes focus on General Education Development (GED) classes, adult basic education and English as a second language. Since mid-April, twenty-eight inmates have received their GED certificates while in our custody.

PRE-RELEASE: The Pre-Release Center was established in order to assist inmates in resume writing, job search techniques and job readiness preparation. Pre-Release is operated as a collaborative effort between Arapahoe County Sheriff’s Office and Arapahoe/Douglas Works. Upon release, inmates may continue to utilize Arapahoe/ Douglas Works to help them find employment. This is a six-week class and inmates do receive a certificate upon completion.

COGNITIVE RESTRUCTURING: These classes are designed to help inmates examine the way they think and how it affects their feelings, behavior and life. Cognitive Restructuring Classes include Problem Solving, Anger Management, Healthy Boundaries, Thinking Traps and Dealing with Feelings.

RELIGIOUS: Numerous religious services are available on a weekly basis for our inmate population. Additionally, we have one full time chaplain to meet the religious needs of the inmates.

SUBSTANCE ABUSE EDUCATION CLASSES: An eight-week psycho-educational class designed to help inmates examine their drug and alcohol use/abuse patterns and increase motivation to make positive behavioral changes. Inmates, who participate and complete this program, also receive a certificate.
