The Arapahoe County Detention Facility’s Medical Section provides a wide range of medical services to all of our inmates. The services available on-site include:

  • Medical care
  • Psychiatric care
  • Psychological Therapy Intervention
  • Dental care
  • Eye care for reading and prescriptive eyeglasses
  • X-rays and other Laboratory Testing
  • An Inpatient Medical Unit
  • An Inpatient Behavior Unit

Medications are provided to inmates multiple times, every day, as well as medical protocol interventions initiated for ill or injured inmates. We have contracts with community facilities to provide any care that cannot be performed at the Detention Facility; i.e., extensive surgical interventions and extensive medical screenings.

Our Medical Director and our Psychiatrist are both on-site four days per week. We have a Physician’s Assistant present two days per week and an OB/GYN Nurse Practitioner present one day, every other week. The eye doctor comes monthly. The dentist is here once a week, however; the dental clinic is open an additional two times per week with the dental technician. Our nurses are here 24/7.

From a nursing perspective, corrections’ nursing is autonomous, challenging and exciting. There is never a dull moment at the jail. The nurse and the inmates know the importance of mutual respect and we rarely encounter anything less.

Our nurses bring a wide variety of experience to the Detention Facility, including, but not limited to: Pediatrics, Medical-Surgical, Oncology, Psych Nursing, Organ Transplants, Acute Care, Intensive Care, and Long Term Care. This helps the nurses to pull on a wide range of expertise in which to better treat the inmates. It is the duty of the Medical section to ensure good healthcare; and the nurses here do an exceptional job.
