Traffic Signals

Traffic signals are installed in unincorporated Arapahoe County if they meet signal warrants that justify their installation. These warrants or guidelines are found in the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices. The MUTCD has been adopted by the State of Colorado as the official guideline for the installation of all traffic control devices. The MUTCD identifies 8 sets of conditions that determine if a location should be signalized.

Traffic signals should not be installed unless one or more of the eight warrants identified in the Manual are met. However, the satisfaction of a warrant or warrants is not in itself justification for a signal. Engineering studies should indicate that the installation of a signal would improve the overall safety and/or operation of the intersection.
