Certified Respite Provider for Foster Children
Respite providers offer short-term, temporary care for foster children in the child welfare system when the full-time foster
family needs some time away, or when a new foster arrangement is being made. Children in foster care may have been victims
of abuse or neglect, or may have struggled with delinquency, substance abuse, mental health issues or gang involvement, and
cannot remain safely in their biological family’s home.
Respite care is not full-time foster care, but involves caring for one or more foster child in your own home for six hours
or more, including overnight stays.
Timeframe: Varies.
Location: In your home.
Qualifications: State law requires that respite providers be trained and certified in the same way as a full-time foster family.
