What is Weatherization? Weatherization is what you do to your home to make it more energy efficient so it can better withstand severe weather conditions
that tend to increase energy use. When you weatherize your home, you make improvements, such as adding attic and wall insulation
and patching air leaks that cause drafts. The result is a home that makes better use of energy, saves money and keeps you
and your family more comfortable.
What services do you provide? When you apply for Weatherization, your home will go through three phases.
1) An inspector will visit your home and conduct an initial Energy Audit to determine where energy inefficiencies are coming
from. Based on this information he or she will create a work plan to tackle the areas that, once fixed, will have the best
long term benefit.
2) With the work plan in hand, Weatherization teams fill their vans with insulation, light bulbs, weatherstripping and other
repair equipment and head out to makeyour home more energy efficient. Action items might require workers to add more insulation in walls, attics or crawl spaces;
conduct air leakage tests and seal any leaks that cause drafts; caulk and weatherstrip; install new energy saving light bulbs;
replace inefficient refrigerators; and also do furnace and hot water tune-ups and checks.
3) Once the work is complete, an inspector reviews the home and conducts a final energy audit to determine the effects of the
enhancements.
What are the benefits? Families who have weatherized their homes tell us they save anywhere from 10 to 30 percent on their energy usage. Remember,
your bill will fluctuate according to factors such as the amount of household activity, rising energy costs, and the weather.
A few improvements or upgrades, such as adding insulation or sealing air leaks, can make your home warmer in the winter, cooler
in the summer and more energy efficient.
Who is eligible? This free program is available to low-income residents of Arapahoe and Adams County who live in mobile, single family and multi-family homes
up to a fourplex. Residents can be owners or renters.
