Youth Award Facts

  • Established in 1986 by Family Tree, Inc. and the Denver Commission on Youth.
  • In 1991, the YMCA, in partnership with municipal and county agencies, churches and community minded businesses, assumed organizational and leadership responsibilities for the award.
  • The award identifies and recognizes young people, ages 13-19, in the community who have shown outstanding achievement in overcoming personal adversity, created a positive change in their environment, or who have contributed in their own quiet way. The award is unique in that it honors those youth whose efforts have been overlooked.
  • The MMCYA is coordinated by a metro steering committee comprised of representatives from County Commissioners, Mayors, City Councils, community agencies and individual volunteers. In late 1999, the City of Littleton became the fiscal agent for the metro process, replacing the YMCA.
  • Nine counties in the metro area (Adams, Arapahoe, Boulder, Broomfield, Clear Creek, Denver, Douglas, Gilpin, and Jefferson) participate in the program.
  • All nominated youth are recognized at the city level. Those living in unincorporated areas of the county are recognized by the closest city.
  • The nomination forms from the recipients honored at the cities in the county will go through a screening process to select 20 to be honored at a county celebration.
  • The County event scheduled for March 2008 will be a cake and coffee reception with the County Commissioners and other county elected officials acting as hosts. The 20 recipients will receive a gold star paperweight along with other gifts from various county businesses. A photograph of the youth receiving the award is given to each recipient as a permanent memento. Arapahoe County’s goal is to have an event totally supported by private funds.
  • Ten of the 20 names honored at the County level are forwarded to the metro level for possible further recognition. After screening, four individuals are chosen from each county. Thirty-six youth will represent their respective counties at a metro banquet to be held in the spring of 2008.
  • Donations may be made to the Arapahoe County Foundation, 501(3)(C) status, in care of the Arapahoe County Commissioner’s Office.

For further information about the Arapahoe County event, contact Carol Dosmann or Karen Richman in the County Commissioner's Office at 303-795-4630.
